The new update might have automatically turned on the feature and eventually caused you this trouble. Some updates, particularly major software platforms tend to override current settings on the phone. Allow your device to finish resetting and restore the default system settings without affecting any saved data. Then enable individual features and options according to your preferences. The new update might have inflicted fatal system errors affecting audio functions, particularly notifications and sound alerts on your iPhone. In that case, wiping out your device would be necessary. This will help eliminate any unknown system errors and lets you set up your device as new and free from any sort of system flaws. After the master reset, your iPhone should reboot by itself.

Test your iPhone to see if the problem is solved after performing a master reset. If the notifications are still not working properly, then you may have to resort to a more advanced solution, which is iOS restore.
